865. Alfred Thomas Porter: The Procession of Gladiators in the Flavian Amphitheatre
6000 [£300]
"Gladiators were trained in schools (ludi) ; at a show of gladiators exhibition bills (libelli) were published containing the names of the fighters. The opposing schools were led round the arena in procession, then matched by pairs. The combatants fought first with wooden swords and afterwards, at the sound of a trumpet, with steel ones. Caesar's ludus is shown in this picture saluting the audience with wooden swords ; the opposing school is seen in the western entrance of the arena. The umpires stand opposite the rings in which the different fights take place, and near them on the low wall which surrounds the arrena are placed the steel swords which will deal death to one, perhaps both, of the combatants."
