Preface

М. Ларионов [p. 10]."

[The long expected boor arrived and was surprised, how he got into this era where he had to find himself through style. And he took a step into the future, and took one back. His tongue was jumping like glowing coal, trying to escape the parched throat. But he had to look with the eyes of a cheeky and cowardly slave, like an enamoured jackal, at his own appearance, being angry like a wild cat – to die like Narcissus, because such is the era and this way the presence takes revenge on the past. Who gave himself into the hands of a time in need, must die from one of its three feuding daughters. (Radabai chapter 7)

In the reign of the Assyrian king Hammurabi an exhibition of Russian, Chinese, Japanese, French and other luboks of the 19th and 20th century was arranged. They caused such an upsurge of sensations of the art’s order that time was killed by the timeless and non-spatial. The emerging sensation reigned as a self-contained infinity. (From the unreleased art history) [p. 5]

The painter Paul Cezanne lived under Ramses II. The creator of the scribe Kheabad Randaj lived, worked and died in Aix-en-Provence. A historical note, from the accuracy of which the clarity of the view wins surprinsingly, appealing not directly to the artwork, since the value and the task of the artistic work are not examined from a time perspective. Thus, the definition and examination of art applies only to it, but in all other cases to everything that surrounds it. (From the unreleased art history chapter 3)

It should be completely indifferent when lubok developed in general, and the Russian lubok in particular. The one who is interested in this, I refer to the publication of Rovinsky, where he will find all the required information on this issue. The most surprising, the most modern teaching of futurism can be transferred to Assyria or Babylon. Assyria with the cult of the goddess Astarte, the teachings of Zarathustra in what is called our time. The feeling of novelty and all the interest will not be lost in any way, since these eras are essentially equal in their development and movement, and only a disadvantaged limitation can examine them from a time perspective. Both eras with completely identical success in the sense of novelty can exist for the so-called future; because in essence the principles expressing them are equivalent, [p. 6]
and time in sense of defining the laws of what exists without its medium, does not play any role. He who says that he looks to the future bearing time in mind, limits himself to nothingness and is blind forever.
Those who see the teaching of the future in Futurism, see it as literally, as in the first impression in Impressionism, but in Cubism only the character of moving plane, giving a figural construction. The Futuristic teaching is and can only be viewed as a timeless movement. Looking at lubok this way, we perceive our artistic epoch in the highest way and the aspiration of our artistic emotions acquires so much expressive power that the artistic image, when perceived by the sense of understanding art, arises with brightness, equal to the moment of its creation, as life and sensations caused by the artwork of timeless nature. The moment of realization of an artwork and what we receive from it, has nothing to do with what is called time. Artistic works are essentially different due to the form in which they are perceived and in which they are recreated.
Lubok is diverse: a lubok printed from copper boards, painted by hand from wooden boards and stencilled, with [p. 7]
colouring along the contour and with colouring going beyond the contour, spilling, which is not an accident, but a fully realized and established tradition. This is confirmed by the fact that in today’s orthodox lubok they still continue to paint in this way. Considering that who is interested in this has a special taste and this is the taste of many, not only ten, but even of hundreds of thousands people.
The contour of the lubok is versatile, in most of the cases it is completely free, examining the object in different planes from different points of view, being set together in one painting. This is a primitive examination of an object from different points of view,
since the object itself is indestructible, and only in the plane it is supplied with different positions. But they also have more complex constructions when the object itself is examined from different sides and from different points of view, (like those of our contemporary artists Picasso and Braque), and this last one, brought up by the lubki and our present artists, is the best proof of the deconstruction of time, since at a single moment is given what can be obtained by inspecting the object with the eye - what requires the already known movement.
Lubok written on trays, snuff- [p. 8]
boxes, glass, wood, tiles, tin (incidentally it reached our days on signboards amazingly various in interpretation). Prints, stencil, embossing on skin, lubok shrines from brass, beads, bugles, embroidery, printed gingerbread, baked dough (artistry which continues in our bakeries and gingerbread shops). The woodcarving goes its own way, as well as the way of the classical Russian forms. Various plaiting, lace, etc.
All this is lubok in the broadest sense of the word and all this is great art.
A beautiful example of lubok wood painting is a painted cupboard in the museum of the Stroganov School. Incidentally the artist was guided by prints and made so-called copies from them. By the way, a few words about the copy – there is no copy in the sense, as it is understood so far. It is an artwork, the starting point to which was engraving, painting, nature, etc. If we knew quite precisely that the copy does and did never exist, that it can exist only in our imagination, but in reality it has never been realized and cannot be realized, then no one would appreciate what is called the original artwork. [p. 9]
Such a miracle of picturesque mastery and spirituality as the Smolensk icon of the Mother of God from the 13th century and the Archangel Michael at the exhibition of ancient Russian art, are not devoid of what is called copies and primitiveness. M. Larionov [p. 10]]

Goncharova, Natalia: Indian and Persian Lubok, p. 11-12

[At all times, Western Europe at its best, came directly or indirectly from the East, as it was in religion (Bible and Gospel) and in art (Archaic Greece and Byzantium). And still there was a difference. The difference rooted in the very spirit of the western and eastern peoples. In the greater civilisation of the first and in the more cultural depths of the spirit and closeness to nature of the second. In the greater love of a resident of the East, including the Slav as synthesis, in the understanding of the surrounding world and the decorativeness of its transmission, whether in poetry (Thousand and One Nights) or in painting of Persian and Hindu miniatures, Chinese, Hindu, Russian, Persian and other lubki or sculpture, such as the Russian stone Woman and Hindu Sculptures, all these artworks, [p. 11]
including the Japanese prints, do not copy nature, do not refine it, but revive it. The consequence of this recreation is a wonderful monumentality, in the appearance of the most important characteristic details, of vitality.
Freedom and expressiveness of the composition, ornamentality and beauty of the colour quality, are fully inherent to the Persian and Hindu lubki. Persian carpets, ceramic tiles (especially from the 12th century) and miniatures, even after the Persian Renaissance (16th century) of the artists Behzād, Jahan, Giza, Bohari and Mania, close to Persia and China and India, have great artistic beauty.
Almost all cultures of Eastern peoples are very ancient. Their traditions are much older than the European ancient world. And this culture and freely interpreted tradition would inevitably have an impact on all Persian and Hindu art, and in particular on lubok as a manifestation of the life of the people who created it, their taste and interests.]
