"Trois des meilleurs Cubistes, tout frémissants de sensibilité rationnelle. Et, comme la clarté des toiles exclut commentaire, c'est le caractère des artistes qu'il échet de souligner.
On les taxa d'outrance, eux les fervents de la mesure ; on les inculpa de réclame, alors que le seul bruit venait des détracteurs.
Mais contre l'injustice de ces reproches, leur foi fut un suffisant réconfort. Rien n'importait, sinon de persévérer. A l'injure on opposerait des œuvres ; et c'est par elles que depuis un an, à travers la tourmente déchaînée, ils poursuivent leur continue ascension.
Une telle attitude revêt noblesse, et lasse l'envie. Aussi le nombre a-t-il singulièrement décru, de ceux qui s'indignent ou s'esclaffent. Beaucoup se sentent troublés,
et d'autres saluent.
